Giacomina and the train

The Giudici Family ranch is eight miles west of Elko, Nevada. To get there you drive along a narrow road parallel to the railroad tracks, then turn left and cross the tracks onto the road that leads to the ranch house. Ownership of the ranch has been passed down through the years, and the family has sometimes had three or four generations sharing the house.

Great grandmother Giacomina Cremetti was a tiny, little lady who lived out her 93 years at the ranch with her daughter, Dorina (Nana) Giudici and Dorina's son, Bill, and his family. One summer, Great Grandma Giacomina took the train from Elko to Fallon to visit her son. A few weeks later, someone looked out of the ranch house window and saw her walking toward them down the road. She was bruised and dusty and dragging her heavy suitcase behind her. They rushed out to meet her! "What are you doing home, what happened to you?" they cried. She answered, "The darn train wouldn’t stop for me to get off, so I jumped."

I distinctly remember my mom talking about this ranch and pointing out directions when we were in Elko. You know my mom and land marks!

Giacomina was quite a lady! Is it any wonder that there are so many stong minded girls in our family!
